Another Lesson From The Super Bowl?

OK, full disclosure requires me to admit that I’m a diehard and longtime NY Giants fan. Please don’t take the following to be Monday Morning Quarterbacking…

Earlier in the week preceding the Super Bowl, I heard a TV commentator mention that Tom Brady appreciated that his coach, Bill Belichick, took on the responsibility of “dressing down” his teammates when they were not performing up to their potential, and that allowed him to be “just one of the guys”.

This struck me as being a bit of an abnegation of his responsibilities as a leader – that of holding his teammates accountable when he perceives them as not living up to their responsibilities as members of the team. Now mind you, it is difficult to argue with the overall success of the Patriots over the past several years (notwithstanding their loss this week to my Giants)….but I still believe that it is one of the key responsibilities of a leader to hold the team (including him or herself) accountable for their performance.

Do you think Tom Brady is diminishing his role as a leader by allowing the coach to be the lead on accountability issues?
